TEAS 6 vs. TEAS 7: What Changed & Why Old Prep Books Hurt You

The Version Changed — Your Materials Must Too
ATI replaced the TEAS 6 with the TEAS 7 in June 2022, and virtually every program now requires the current version. Yet hand-me-down prep books, borrowed flashcards, and advice from someone who tested years ago still circulate — and studying the wrong blueprint means practicing the wrong formats, weights, and timing. The two versions overlap substantially, but the differences decide points.
This guide maps exactly what changed between TEAS 6 and TEAS 7, which old materials are still safe, and how to prepare for the current exam.
What Changed at a Glance
| Feature | TEAS 6 | TEAS 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Total questions / time | 170 / 209 minutes | 170 / 209 minutes (unchanged) |
| Question formats | Multiple choice only | MC plus select-all, fill-in-blank, ordered response, hot spot |
| Reading questions | 53 in 64 minutes | 45 in 55 minutes |
| Reading weight | Lower | Higher — about 31% of composite |
| English weight | Higher | Lower — about 16% of composite |
| Science structure | Life + Physical Sciences combined | Biology and Chemistry split out; more A&P application |
| Delivery | Paper option existed | Computer-based only |
The Four Changes That Cost Points
1. New question formats
The biggest shift is not content but format. TEAS 7 adds multiple-select (all-or-nothing scoring), fill-in-the-blank numeric entry, drag-and-drop ordering, and hot-spot image clicks. Students armed only with TEAS 6 multiple-choice practice meet unfamiliar interfaces under time pressure — the exact situation that burns composure and points.
2. Reading gained weight
Reading jumped to roughly 31 percent of the composite, with heavier emphasis on integrating knowledge across passages and graphics. Test-takers who could previously coast on Reading now need real passage strategy and timed practice.
3. English lost weight
English fell to roughly 16 percent. The content — grammar, punctuation, roots — barely changed, but the return on heavy English investment shrank. A few days of rule review now suffices for most students.
4. Science leans applied
Science kept its heavyweight status but asks more application and analysis questions and fewer pure-recall ones, with anatomy, biology, and chemistry reorganized into clearer sub-areas. Memorizers suffer; students who practice reasoning through scenarios gain.
Which Old Materials Are Still Safe?
- Safe for concept review: TEAS 6 books and flashcards cover the large majority of the same content — fine for learning anatomy, formulas, and grammar rules.
- Unsafe as your only prep: TEAS 6 materials contain zero new-format practice, outdated section timing, and old Reading/English weights.
- Mandatory additions: at least one TEAS 7-specific full practice test with alternate item types, plus current timing per section (55/57/60/37 minutes).
- Check the edition before buying used: confirm "TEAS 7" or "7th edition" on the cover — repackaged TEAS 6 books still appear in marketplaces.
Preparing for the Current Exam
- Study the TEAS 7 blueprint. Four sections, 170 questions, 209 minutes, five question formats — know the container before filling it.
- Give Reading its new respect. Dedicate at least a quarter of study time to passage strategy and timed sets.
- Practice the new formats deliberately. SATA discipline, choice-free math, sequence orderings, and diagram clicks each need rehearsal.
- Verify your school's version. If any admissions page still mentions TEAS 6, email admissions — it almost certainly means TEAS 7, but confirm rather than assume.
The version upgrade was evolution, not revolution: roughly four-fifths of the content carried over. Update your formats, rebalance Reading and English, and the TEAS 7 becomes the familiar exam it is — just tested the modern way.
